Carved lacquer ware is hand-made and its manufacturing processes include body-making,internal enamel-coating through burning, background-coating, lacquer-application, design-tracing, engraving and burnishing. Copper or other materiasls are used for making the body, on which tens of layers of lacquer are coated, and sometimes as much as two hundred layers, as the case requires. Then on the lacquer layers, attractive motifs against a background of multifarious floral designs are carved by artisans’ cunning knife-work.

Lacquer is a sap from the lacquer tree, collected in a similar way as rubber. Despite the common Chinese term “as black as lacquer. it is actually milky in colour when
freshly collected, and only turns black on oxidation. Addition of various minerals will alter the colour to red,green and yellow.
